5 Must-Have Trends for the New Year
With New Year’s just around the corner, it’s time to clean out our closets and celebrate the new year in style with the latest must-have trends. Don’t throw everything out just yet, however, as some of 2016’s biggest trends are throwbacks to an earlier era (the return of the power shoulder, anyone?) or even closet staples.Start the new year off on a fresh foot, and an even fresher wardrobe with our top 5 must-haves for every style and every closet.
1. Walk the Line
Likely already a staple in your closet, stripes are one of the biggest must-haves going into the New Year. This year, stripes are more than just the classic black and white version that we’re all familiar with, and instead come in all different shapes, sizes and colors imaginable. Get creative with our favorite closet staple, as seen on the runways of House of Holland and Guy Laroche.
2. Shine On
You’ll be wearing sparkles well into the New Year with this trend. Metallics, sequins and any and all shiny fabrics are a major trend this year, as seen on the runways of Custo Barcelona and Jeremy Scott. Shine on by wearing it head to toe or go more subtle by integrating it in with other prints. Now is the time to let your light shine inside and out.
3. Night In
Your favorite boudoir wear is getting a street-appropriate makeover this year. Slip dresses are now appropriate for daywear and matching, two-piece loungewear is the new power suit. Nervous about slipping into your delicates outside of the bedroom? Pair with jeans or a leather jacket to keep it casual and add an instant cool. If you’re more on the daring side, take cues from Givenchy––who sent out luxurious silks fit for even the fanciest of cocktail parties.
4. All in the Shoulders
The term “power shoulder” takes on a whole new meaning this year. Whether you go big and avant garde or keep it sexy with strategically placed cutouts, make a statement with bold details in your shoulders this year. Take a page out of London-based label Preen and French designer Stephane Rolland’s book––both of whom paid homage to this trend with their Spring Summer 2016 collections.
5. Ruffle it Up
Arguably one of the most unexpected trends to emerge on the scene this year, our final trend has to do with all things feminine. Think plenty of ruffles, frills and lace, as seen on the runways of Betsey Johnson and Ryan Lo. There are no rules with this trend, so feel free to go head-to-toe or keep it simple.
