Tommy Hilfiger Looks Back to the 60s for Spring / Summer 2015

The late 1960s was the iconic age of flower power, the summer of love, Woodstock festival and good old fashioned rock ‘n’ roll. these were formative years for American designer Tommy Hilfiger, and as such he decided to use them as inspiration for his Spring / Summer 2015 collection shown at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week New York.

Speaking at an event preview, Hilfiger said, “I’ve had a dream of doing a full collection of rock-style clothing for a very long time now. People don’t really know me now for my love of music – The Beatles, the Stones, Hendrix, the Who – so I thought I would celebrate my passion, my beginnings, my roots.”

Hilfiger’s tribute extended from the catwalk’s surroundings – strewn with Gerber daisies reminiscent of the iconic Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album cover – to the live music played, and even the models themselves, with Georgia May Jagger opening the procession.

Models took to the catwalk with true festival style: hair centre-parted, sporting painted-on tattoos and even carrying electric guitars. However, the care-free hair and psychedelic mise-en-scene daisies did not translate to a faded floral hippy aesthetic: Hilfiger opted instead for tailored cuts and star patterns, with flares kept skin-tight to the knee teamed with fitted jackets. Star shapes featured on everything from accessories including a gold necklace and oversized stole, to knitwear and the painted tattoos. Burgundy, gold and black dominated, making for an edgy meets glamorous, rock-chic ensemble.

Returning to his roots in more ways than one, the collection featured a pair of patchwork denim jeans reminiscent of Hilfiger’s entry into the fashion industry – up-cycling jeans for sale in his shop, The People’s Place.
