Although some unconventional inspirations captivated the influential creators of these trends and collections, we have handpicked the best and most note-worthy for you to add to your wardrobe these seasons.

10. Belted Waist

Designers have opted for more feminine silhouettes and long gone are the days of hiding your small waist just because it’s cold outside. Always celebrating a woman’s curves, designers such as Versace, Custo Barcelona of Catalan, Donna Karan, and Hermes accentuated their looks with this slimming accessory. Slim belts, playful embellished ones, long belts on the side, whatever type there is, it’s all about presenting a refined, confident, and polished sexy woman.

9. Textures

The A/W 2014 runways saw designers pump things up with all sorts of textures, intricate fabrics, embellishments, furs and volume. In Milan, Fendi added volume and layers while Iceberg was a tad subtler in using texture by mixing knits with neoprene, pleats and fur collars. Lots of layers and thick fabrics were seen as part of Tommy Hilfiger’s collection while on the contrary, Vera Wang used very light fabrics and enriched them with gorgeous appliqués and other embellishments for a much more luxurious feel.

8. Monastic

Understated simplicity, the Middle Ages and Budhist monk inspired garments, in addition to references to the church in general, were seen throughout some of the collections these season, making this a very holy and present trend. Prabal Gurung took inspiration from the Himalayas with the layered and draped ensembles in his collection. MM6’s Martin Maison Margiela shows a modern day take on the loose-fitting monk robe. Sticking to its roots, Hermes remained classic and tasteful, channeling the sacred Mont Saint-Michel’s spiritual atmosphere in its ready to wear collection.

7. Patchwork

Patchwork, also known as “pieced work” is also visible in a lot of collections this season. This form of needlework involves sewing together pieces of fabric into a larger design, seen with different fabric types, colors, patterns and many other combinations. Florentine themed Just Cavalli played with different shapes and textures, adding more embellishments to its intricate rocker DNA. Calvin Klein kept it laid back while Valentino made this trend look very romantic and flirty with the use of lace.

6. Nature-Inspired

Forests, birds, wild animals and flowers are the inspiration behind some of the season’s most exceptional shows. Gucci and Tom Ford went with head to toe animal prints while Just Cavalli mixed them up with floral patterns. Masters of sophistication, Valentino designers’ collection was packed with embroidered delicate designs featuring birds, butterflies and flowers. Roberto Cavalli took inspiration with the 4 elements: water, fire, air and earth, also featuring the brands iconic use of furs, snow leopard prints and python skin

5. Masculine Tailoring

This trend was very present throughout the catwalks around the world. Just because tailoring is masculine doesn’t mean you can’t look feminine. On the contrary, this look is very sleek and in style for A/W women’s wear this year. Designers managed to offer empowering looks for the office, casual days, cocktail parties and even fancier soirees. Prada offered oversized jackets that add a touch of cool to fitted and sexy dresses underneath while Giorgio Armani closes out Milan Fashion Week with muted shades of grays and blacks. Hugo Boss went with women tuxedos while Theyskens Theory added a subtle sex appeal incorporating belted tailored looks with the tuxedo. Menswear inspired garments are destined to be worn by confident fun modern day women.

4. 60’s Mod

Making a comeback is the 60’s Mod. Reto inspired prints, mini-skirts, trapeze dresses, and beehive hairdos with a modern twist were in full swing on the runways for these colder seasons. Valentino incorporated fun psychedelic accents and daring prints while Prada and Chloe presented 60’s prints on silk dresses. D Squared went all in with their 60’s feel from their insane asylum backdrop to the crystal embellishments on their mini dresses as well as the beehive hairstyles to their models. Louis Vuitton had one of the strongest 60’s inspired collections but using high tech fabrics to create modern mod garments.

3. Quilted

For the coldest of days, we have the warmest of trends, quilts. Designers are making duvet couture look stylish while also being functional. Imagine taking the comfort of your bed to a cocktail party. Everywhere from Paris to New York, walking down the runways this season are down, leather, and nylon quilting on coats, jackets, shirts, skirts, sleeves, dresses and more. This trend doesn’t need to be bulky or oversized. If you still want to show off your curves and keep warm, designers made it work.

2. Fairy Tale Inspired

Life may not be a fairy tale but you can dress the part with this season’s collections. The A/W imaginative runways displayed inspiration from all your favorite fictional characters, from heroines to princesses and villains. One great example was Dolce and Gabbana’s “Once Upon A Time In Sicily” collection filed with luxurious fairy tale gothic and medieval inspirations surrounded by an enchanted garden set. It felt like Little Red Riding Hood walking down the catwalk! There were modern day villains, of course, with Herve Leger by Max Azria collection and Natalie Capell, mastering the darker side of this majestic trend. Not only is this fairy tale trend is strong; it was made very clear that the cape is the outerwear piece of choice for the upcoming seasons.

1. Hairy

Topping the list for the most visible trend this season are the “hairy” accents. From furs, feathers, fuzz, fringe and other embellishments, this fixture are found on coats, sleeves, scarves, head-gears, collars and hand bags in the designers’ collections. In Milan, Fendi went all out adding maw hawk-like accents on the neck and shoulders of his futuristic sci-fi collection. Roberto Cavalli not only had models parade in hairy furs, but sister brand, Just Cavalli, featured many hairy pieces that included handbags, collars, shoes, jackets, vests and more. In New York, Prabal Garung, who probably had the hairiest collection of all, was inspired by Nepalese nomads in his usual well crafted and fashion forward pieces. Overall, designers certainly impressed us with their creative takes on this bold and eye-catching trend, making it the number 1 fashion must have for the season.
