A Subtle Spring is Upon Us at Calvin Klein Spring/Summer 2015

When one thinks of spring fashion, images of pastel-colored palettes, floral prints and billowing chiffon fabrics to sway in the mild breeze come to mind. However for Spring 2015, Francisco Costa, Creative Director of women’s wear for Calvin Klein, decided to bring his well-renowned minimalist sensibilities to the runway in the form of muted colors, hourglass silhouettes and subtle, yet distinct fabrics such as high-shine leather and liquid lamé.

It seems that Costa’s partiality for delicate sophistication has been consistent throughout his career in the fashion industry, going as far back as 2009 when he expressed his satisfaction with the understatedness of his fall collection to Interview Magazine: “The runway presentations are modest, but there’s substance behind them. Hopefully the clothes will speak for themselves.”

When asked if he was glad to not be doing florals, Costa responded, “I love floral. We have tons of floral from Calvin himself. I just don’t think this is a floral moment for us.” And from the looks of this September 2014 runway show, florals were not needed.

Ethereal shades of burgundy, navy, cream and ebony were utilized in a bold yet harmonious manner with body-conscious fabrics. The architecture of the clothes themselves were tenacious, and flattered the female figure in a statuesque way.

Calvin Klein’s Spring 2015 collection represents a strong femininity not often seen in spring collections: a refreshing breeze among the quintessential florals. Sophisticated women who also wish to stand out this upcoming spring should take this collection into serious consideration.
