Caribbean Flower Power at Stella Nolasco Spring/Summer 2015



Stella Nolasco is Puerto Rico's most inimitable fashion export, and her first-ever appearance at this month's Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York did not fail to deliver, cementing her reputation as a fixture of the week.

Nolasco's Spring/Summer 2015 lineup features sheer floor-length lace gowns, open-back midi dresses, A-line silhouettes and her first foray into tropical floral prints. She has abandoned the bold accessories, intricate black dresses and super-saturated colors of 2014's Spring/Summer season in favor of a gentler color scheme, well-placed cutouts and a small nod to the architecture of Art Nouveau.

At once bold and soft, the dresses feature vintage designs on modern silhouettes with generous use of her trademark lace, embellishments, and glossy, flouncy fabrics. The tropical plant motif is apparent throughout the lineup, with some dresses incorporating abstract vines, fronds and flowers.

Nolasco has gone in record in interview to say that this season, which she has named “Saint of My Devotion,” is influenced by the “religious mysticism of Puerto Rican culture”—the color palette, appropriate for spring and summer attire, is inspired by Caribbean colors with sky blue, chartreuse and coral featuring prominently. Even the intricate sequin embellishments, some evoking a sense of wings open in flight, are derived from traditional Puerto Rican patterns.
